before I’m finished, polished, grown,
from all the weight I’ve born
upon my shoulders, head, and breast.
It is that weight within my chest
that comes to settle heaviest
and robs me of my ease
of mind, motion, flow,
spreads like veins of frost
and steals my healthy glow.
I stiffen beneath the burdens,
once willing but now forced,
and you would think
I’d tied these anchor’s knots
with my own freezing fingers
before I shoved the anchor from the port
and sank beneath the airy hope
to darker depths.
The Silver CityA silver city stood Once a time not long ago Beneath the sun, it sparkled Beneath the moon, it glowed Its beauty rivaled all the land And Nature’s envy grew Until one day its heavy hands Swept up the sky’s sweet blue And made a storm between its palms, A fork of lightning staggered down And struck and shook the peaceful ground, Lodged and sparked a violent flame And from the shadows fire came.The Silver City
